Eu am rămas şocat când am văzut cât de mult contează să fii în primii trei. M-am gândit eu că contează mult, dar nu am crezut că este chiar aşa de mare diferenţa între primii trei şi restul, până când nu am citit statistica.

Merită calculat! Dacă se caută de 1000 de ori pe zi după un cuvânt cheie (aceasta putem să vedem cu ajutorul Adwords, despre asta a fost vorba în prima lecţie), atunci dintre 1000 de vizitatori câţi se distribuie teoretic pentru fiecare poziţie din clasament.

Deci 1000 de căutări. 70% dintre aceştia aleg lista organică, iar astfel rămân 700. 90% din aceşti 700 de vizitatori rămân pe prima pagină a rezultatelor, adică 630 de vizitatori rămân pentru primele 10 poziţii.

Din 630 de vizitatori, dacă rotunjim, prima pagină primeşte 296, al doilea 88, al treilea 63, iar celor 7 care mai sunt pe prima pagină, li se distribuie 183 de vizitatori.

Nu trebuie să vă necăjiţi dacă site-ul dumneavoastră nu figurează în primele trei locuri în clasamentul unui cuvânt cheie, pentru că în statistică a fost vorba despre un singur cuvânt cheie şi site-ul dumneavoastră nu este optimizat numai după un singur cuvânt cheie, ci după mult mai multe.

Merită să vă jucaţi puţin cu cifrele, ca să vă daţi seama în funcţie de interes şi poziţie în clasament câţi vizitatori puteţi să aşteptaţi. Aceste cifre sunt preluate dintr-o statistică, nu se pot generaliza pentru toate cazurile, pentru că de exemplu aceste rezultate arată cu totul altfel deja şi în clipa în care nu apar anunţuri plătite pentru un anumit cuvânt de căutare.

Since Google isn’t providing you with their whole language database and algorithms, you know that somewhere in their AJAX script they are requesting data from their server. Using the location that the script requests the data, we can request the data ourselves.

Translation Function

Here’s a function that will translate from one language to another. I’ll explain everything after.

I’m not sure if Google has any API limits on this – I doubt it. The API is designed for websites that want to have their content available in multiple languages. I don’t think that Google would limit the API and potentially hurt anyone who depends on them for translations.

You can find a list of all of the supported languages here. To use any language, you would have to convert the language name (such as ‘English’) to the language code (such as ‘en’). Today’s announcement that Google Analytics Launches Asynchronous Tracking is music to my ears. Not only does it make web sites faster, switching over to this async pattern improves uptime and increases the amount of analytics data gathered. I’ll touch on each of these three benefits, and wrap-up with an overview of the new code snippet.
Faster

The pain of loading JavaScript files is that they block the page from rendering and block other resources from downloading. There are workarounds to these problems. Chapter 4 of Even Faster Web Sites describes six techniques for Loading Scripts Without Blocking. One of those, the Script DOM Element approach, is the technique used in the new Google Analytics async pattern. Google Analytics’ ga.js file is a perfect example of a script that should be loaded asynchronously – it doesn’t add any content to the page, so we want to load it without blocking the images and stylesheets that give users what they really came to see.
Improved Uptime

What happens if a script takes a long time to load, or fails to load? Because scripts block rendering, users are left staring at an empty page. Google Analytics has an amazing infrastructure behind it, but any resource, especially from third parties, should be added cautiously. It’s great that the GA team is evangelizing a pattern that allows the web site to render while ga.js is being downloaded.
More Data

One workaround to the blocking problem is to move scripts to the bottom of the page. In fact, this is exactly what’s suggested in the old ga.js snippet. But this means users who leave a page quickly won’t generate any analytics data (they leave before the script at the bottom finishes loading). Moving to the async pattern and loading it at the bottom of the page’s head, as suggested, means more of these quick page views get measured. This is too good to believe – not only do you get a faster, more resilient page, but you actually get better insights into your traffic.
The Async Snippet

Just to be clear, ga.js will continue to work even if web site owners don’t make any changes. But, if you want a faster site, greater uptime, and more data, here’s what the new async snippet looks like:

It’s extremely cool to see this pattern being evangelized for such a major piece of the Internet. A few items of note:

* Obviously, you have to replace “UA-XXXXX-X” with your ID.
* Since ga.js is being loaded asynchronously, there has to be a way for web site owners to couple their desired GA functions with the code when it finishes loading. This is done by pushing commands onto the Google Analytics queue object, _gaq.
* Once all your callback commands are queued up, the ga.js script gets loaded. This is wrapped inside an anonymous function to avoid any namespace conflicts.
* Inside the anonymous function is where we see the Script DOM Element approach being used – with two nice improvements. A ’script’ element is created and its SRC is set to the appropriate ga.js URL. Looking ahead to support of asynchronous scripts in HTML5, the ‘async’ attribute is set to ‘true’. Very nice! The main benefit of this is it tells the browser that subsequent scripts can be executed immediately – they don’t have to wait for ga.js. The last line adds the script element to the DOM. This is what triggers the actual download of ga.js. In most of my code I do document.getElementsByTagName(“head”)[0].appendChild, but that fails if the document doesn’t have a head element. This is a more robust implementation.

It’s always hard to find the right spot on the complexibility curve. This async snippet hits it just right. It’s slightly more complex than the old pattern, but not by much. Despre Google, despre cum tratează uneori conţinutul duplicat şi despre ce factori favorizează o poziţionare mai bună în căutările Google (SERP = Search Engine Results Page).

Astăzi, printre multele e-mailuri primite, găsesc şi unul în care erau detaliate zilele libere de anul următor şi motivul pentru care sunt aşa de puţine. Curios din fire ca să găsesc sursa, caut pe google după “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, pentru ca in 2010” şi mă uit printre rezultate:
1. Pe primul loc, un blog pe platformă blogspot (unul din serviciile Google), cu articolul publicat în data de 20 mai 2009; are PR 0 şi vechime din Octombrie 2008.
2. Pe locul doi un forum, unde mesajul a fost publicat în data de 11 aprilie 2009; are PR 2 şi vechime din Iulie 2006.
3. Pe locul 3, un alt blog (al unui braşovean de-al meu ), unde pot doar să bănuiesc că articolul a fost publicat pe 22 sau pe 23 aprilie (conform arhivei); are PR 4 şi vechime din Octombrie 2007.

Rezultatele diferă un pic dacă vom căuta cu Firefox, însă primele două poziţii se păstrează.
Astfel, putem trage concluzia că, cel mai probabil, articolul original a fost cel de pe forum (scris în data de 11.04), iar restul sunt cu conţinut duplicat. Totuşi de ce articolul de pe blogul Blogspot a fost poziţionat primul deşi a fost scris cu mai bine de o lună mai tîrziu?
Aţi greşi dacă l-aţi suspecta pe Google de favoruri… deşi platforma blogului pe care a fost scris articolul face parte din serviciile Google, nu ăsta a fost motivul.

Analizând un pic situaţia, vom putea observa următoarele diferenţe:
1. Primul rezultat, are:
- tag-ul TITLE conţine “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010“;
- URL-ul conţine keywordurile căutării “sa-va-relaxati-anul-acesta-ca-in-2010.html” (Friendly URLs)
- în conţinutul paginii expresia “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010″ formatată cu H3;
2. Al doilea rezultat, are:
- tag-ul TITLE conţine “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010“;
- URL-ul nu conţine keywordurile căutării, ci este un URL dinamic “/viewtopic.php?f=14&p=1225“
- în conţinutul paginii expresia “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010″ o găsim formatată atât cu H2, cât şi cu H3;
3. Al treilea rezultat, are:
- tag-ul TITLE nu conţine “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010“;
- URL-ul nu conţine keywordurile căutării;
- în conţinutul paginii expresia “Sa va relaxati anul acesta, ca in 2010″ o găsim formatată ca text obişnuit şi un pic modificată “Sa va relaxati si sa va plimbati anul acesta, ca in 2010.”

Observăm că:
- blog-ul de pe blogspot a fost poziţionat înaintea celui de pe forum din cauza existenţei keyword-urilor in URL; deşi articolul de pe forum este mai vechi, site-ul are PR mai mare şi este mai vechi decât blogul, a fost poziţionat după acesta în rezultatele căutărilor.
- deşi probabil veţi crede acum că PR-ul sau vechimea site-ului nu au nimic de-a face cu poziţionarea în SERP, nu este chiar aşa; acestea au favorizat cel mai probabil poziţionarea blogului “Groapa cu proşti” pe poziţia a treia. Chiar dacă nu are keyword-urile căutării în TITLE sau în URL, Google le-a găsit în conţinutul paginii şi site-ul având un trust rank bun, a obţinut implicit şi o poziţie bună; mai mult de atât pagina respectivă a şi primit PR 1 la ultimul update (din 27 mai).

Concluziile în baza celor de mai sus, ar fi că:
- plasarea cuvintelor cheie (keywords) în TITLE, URL este foarte importantă;
- existenţa cuvintelor cheie în meta DESCRIPTION nu este foarte importantă în căutările cu Google pentru că descrierea site-ului oricum e generată automat din conţinutul paginii;
- vechimea şi PR-ul site-ului favorizează obţinerea unei poziţionări mai bune chiar dacă o parte din conţinut este duplicat; o mutare inteligentă este ca, dacă faci asta, să modifici măcar titlul.

În completare, aş adăuga că în obţinerea unei poziţionări mai bune faţă de concurenţă, mai contează şi:
- numărul de cuvinte cheie din conţinut;
- domeniul de interes al site-ului raportat la keyword-urile căutate;
- numărul şi valoarea link-urilor către pagina poziţionată în SERP;

Sfat: Deşi cel mai probabil, existenţa Friendly URL a ajutat în obţinerea primului rezultat, nu v-aş recomanda să folosiţi URL Rewriting pentru un site deja existent, care are pagini indexate.
Este bine dacă folosiţi de la început Friendly URL, însă dacă aveţi deja pagini indexate, este foarte probabil să vă creaţi singuri conţinut duplicat şi să fiţi penalizat pentru asta. Mai mult de atât, nu există diferenţe majore între indexarea paginilor cu URL DINAMIC vs cele cu URL STATIC încât să fie justificată modificarea lor cu mod_rewrite. Totuşi, dacă vă decideţi să riscaţi şi să rescrieţi formatul în care sunt afişate URL-urile, folosiţi tag-ul CANONICAL în care puteţi specifica ce variantă de link doriţi să fie luată în considerare; astfel puteţi evita tratarea paginilor care au acelaşi conţinut dar URL diferit să fie luate drept conţinut duplicat. Din cate am testat in ultimul timp, va recomand cu caldura wordpress. Pe langa faptul ca este usor de instalat pe server ( practic aveti nevoie de user si parola pt o baza de date, si un cont de ftp prin care sa urcati fisierele pe site), exista plugin-uri pentru aproape orice, care se instaleaza automat prin meniul de administrare. Deasemenea sunt mii de skinuri gratuite, usor de modificat.

Daca doriti va pot instala un astfel de CMS, asa cum se prezinta el, impreuna cu o gazduire pe server de 2 luni cu 70RON. Daca nu va descurcati cu modificarea acestuia va pot ajuta si in aceasta privinta. Daca va descurcati, ceea ce si cred puteti avea un site functional cu numai 70RON. SEO Should Be Done With Care

The reason why I am writing this post is because I still run into people that think they know what SEO is, but it turns out that they really don’t They find out that my job entails “Search Engine Optimization” and they start rattling off all these ways to “manipulate search engines”. Then I shake my head and sigh in disbelief.

1. The Manipulation Mindset

This mindset is usually prominent in more sales driven people. Their interest in SEO is purely from a profit stand point. They know if they rank high on a search engine results page, that will translate into some sort of dollar return. Naturally, these people are the Google Spam Team’s worst enemies.

Let me clarify SEO right now: Search Engine Optimization is not about manipulating search engine rankings. What it is, is the profession of ensuring that a website is search engine friendly. This means that all the content on the website is easily indexed by the search engines and that the website architecture is crafted in a logical format that search engines appreciate.

When people get it in their head that they are going to “trick” the search engines, that’s when websites get banned or penalized. Remember, the people who work at the search engines are probably a lot smarter than you and it will be tough to slip one past them.

Finally, this is the most important part: Think from a search engine’s perspective. They also run a business. And their job is to make sure they provide their users with the best experience possible. Therefore if your site doesn’t deserve to be at the top of the first page of the search engine results, then the search engines will probably not send their users to your site. And that is exactly what you should think when you design and build content for a website: “Am I providing the best experience I can with regards to the subject matter my site is based on?”.

2. Keyword Stuffing

This is a common newbie mistake. They think their a simple relationship between what the search engine returns when a keyword is queried. That relationship is: the more you have a specific keyword on your site, the more likely your website will be one of the top ranking selections in the search engine results pages.

Only if it was that easy, right? Well actually, no. Think about it. If the first site a search engine returned was just littered with the same words over and over again, wouldn’t that be a poor result?

Keyword stuffing includes repeating a keyword in any on-page content, in titles, in anchor text (hyperlinks), or on the source code. There is simply no need to repeat keywords ever! Just don’t do it. It’s actually really easy. All you have to do is write your content naturally. Just make sure the keyword you are aiming for is once in the title, once in the heading and at least once on the on-page content. Finally don’t make more than one page based on the same keyword.

3. Link Spamming

This is where the intermediate SEO person makes mistakes. This includes a lot of so called “SEO companies”. They learn that having many links pointing back to your website increases a website’s search engine rankings. This is partially true. However, it’s the quality of links, not necessarily the quantity of links that make a site climb the rankings. And even more important than that is the relevance of those links.

Anyone out there amassing thousands of links from all over the internet using the same keyword anchor text is doing their website a disservice. Any company doing this is liable for getting their client’s website removed from the search engines.

4. Buying Links

This is a touchy one. Once people realize how hard it is to get backlinks to their website, buying links becomes a tempting situation. But in the eyes of the search engines, this is one thing you can do to be banished to the depths of search engine hell. They absolutely hate it when you buy links. Now you may be clever and get away with it, but if you get caught, boy oh boy you are up that famous creek!

5. Keyword Cannibalization

This one is really tricky. The idea is you only want one webpage on your site per topic or keyword. If you have two pages that are basically about the same topic or keyword, then the search engines have a hard time deciding which one to choose. A lot of keyword cannibalization issues can be solved with a good site architecture.

For instance if you write about the same topic all the time, you would want one main page that is optimized for the keyword or topic at hand and then multiple sub pages that support the main topic page. Think of it as building a mini pyramid for that keyword.

6. Hidden Text

This is an interesting mistake because you may think, “I would never do that, because that’s just stupid”. But sometimes your website design is creating hidden text without you knowing it. I think this is less of a problem these days because designers use CSS to do all sorts of image replacements. However, I tell our clients that if you can avoid it, you probably should. There really is no need to hide text because there are plenty of design solutions available.
